Water is rapidly becoming scarce

Water scarcity will soon become a reality – yet 80% of the world’s sewage and wastewater are still being discharged straight into the environment. Interest in Vilokan is growing as more and more companies want to change that. The Swedish environmental technology group is helping customers around the world to take better care of their water and reuse it in closed circuits.

“By creating closed systems, we are helping our customers to become independent. As water shortages become more commonplace, companies that reuse water will have a strong advantage – in terms of both profitability and social responsibility,” says Lars Rosell, co-founder of the Vilokan Group.

Vilokan has been working with innovation in the fields of environmental technology, water purification and recycling for more than 30 years. During that time, society has failed to properly look after its water, without which neither people nor industry can survive. Lars Rosell is now seeing the emergence of a new view of water as a natural resource.

“The success of environmental initiatives depends on them being profitable. Demand for our solutions is on the rise and we are now helping industries in increasing numbers of countries to close their cycles,” says Lars Rosell.

The focus of Goal six of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is water. It is crucial that more major players take the step to become responsible stewards of water resources to address water scarcity.

Forward-thinking industries want to take responsibility for clean water, clean air, safe working environments and safe products. The smart way to do this is to reuse the resources they already have. It is absurd to use drinking water for industrial processes and then discard it as wastewater rather than clean and reuse it,” says Lars Rosell.

One example of a profitable closed circuit is Vilokan’s process for dealing with the fluid used to de-ice aircraft. Vilokan’s facility at Arlanda airport recovers water and glycol from the de-icing fluid collected from 14 Swedish airports. Since October 2018, the facility has removed heavy metals and glycol from 58,000 tonnes of water. The process is profitable for all stakeholders and, in two and a half years, it has reduced emissions at the airports by the equivalent of 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, simply through the reuse of raw materials.

The wider market is rapidly awakening to the potential of recycling de-icing fluid. Vilokan has sold facilities to a number of airports in Europe and North America and is engaged in several partnerships with global players for the recycling of water and solvents.

One such partnership is with Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to which Vilokan ADF Solution recently delivered (February 2021) two ready-assembled facilities in 40-foot containers (built by Vilokan Recycling Tech).

These facilities are tested in our workshop and are basically installed with “plug and play” operation. The fluid collected from the de-icing surfaces normally contains about 10% glycol. It is filtered by the system and the final product contains at least 50% glycol. This fluid is then sold onwards to be further processed.

Demand for Vilokan’s expertise and end-to-end solutions is increasing as more and more industries around the world are realising that managing resources efficiently by closing the loops is profitable. The Vilokan Group is engaged in business with customers in 20 or so countries and this figure is expected to climb in the coming years. Vilokan has 70 employees and generates a turnover of almost half a billion Swedish kronor and the company is going through a dynamic phase of expansion.
