Purification of used de-icing fluid at airports
The environment is negatively impacted by the de-icing fluid sprayed onto aircraft before take-off. The main component, glycol, requires an large amount of oxygen in order to break down. It harms nature, especially waterways. In addition, used de-icing fluid from aircraft contains cadmium and heavy metals.
A lot of airports do not take care of their used de-icing fluid. Many just let it run out into the surrounding environment. Vilokan ADF Solutions helps responsible airports across the globe to collect and purify their used de-icing fluid. Our solutions are based on a closed cycle where heavy metals and bi-products are separated out in a multi stage process. In addition to saving the environment, the processes also generate pure water, something that there is a shortage of on our planet.
By collecting and purifying used de-icing fluid, the airport strengthens its sustainability work and at the same time equips itself for growing regulatory requirements on emissions and efficient resource use. In addition, the airports get to reduce their waste costs.
The purification process also enables the recycling of a raw material that is a finite fossil resource – glycol. A long term sustainable process that also holds great economic potential.
Recycling valuable glycol
The economics of acting in an environmentally-friendly way has great potential. In a world with ever increasing raw material costs, recycling plays an increasingly important part. Through an advanced process, Vilokan ADF Solutions recycles 99.5% pure glycol from the used de-icing fluid. This means that the used glycol is ready to be mixed for new de-icing fluid that can be used at the airport or as a component in other glycol-based products.
Regardless of how the airport chooses to use the recycled glycol, it has a significant market value. Recycling glycol has a major impact on the overall calculation for processing used de-icing fluid. An excellent example of a circular economy.
Customise turnkey facilities
Vilokan purification and recycling facilities combine technical innovations with many years of experience of design, commissioning and maintenance. The facilities consist of well-proven, standard components. This means that we can offer both high operational stability and spare parts availability.
The facilities are modular-based, which means that every solution can easily be adapted to the individual needs of each airport. In close collaboration with the client, Vilokan’s experienced project management designs a turnkey facility that meets the recycling needs of the airport.
We can supply the facility as a separate unit for airport operators that prefer to own and manage the facility themselves, or run them via an existing landside service agent. After thorough testing and handover, the selected operator takes over the responsibility of the facility. We are then on hand for any servicing and support requirements.
Turnkey service solutions with operation and financing
Thanks to the revenue generated via the recycling of glycol, Vilokan ADF Solutions can also offer very attractive turnkey service solutions for airport operators. We take care of everything from planning and design to construction and operation of the facility. We even offer financing so that our clients do not have any unnecessary capital ties.
We also have vast experience of meeting the specific challenges faced by operators with multiple airports. We estimate the requirements, volumes and the most effective solutions. Our starting point is to always strive for local, decentralised recycling facilities. But sometimes, the best option is transportation and then the logistics for that must be designed in the best possible way. For the environment, For the economy, For the future
